🏗️ Day 2 Recap: Exploring Post-Mining Restoration at DRDGold 🚜
Today, we stepped into the field to witness post-mining rehabilitation in action at DRDGOLD Limited !

📍 Kevin Kruger (MD, DRDGold) shared their vision of reclaiming and restoring gold tailings to create new land-use opportunities.
📜 Hulme Scholes & Lia Bolz (Malan Scholes Attorneys) provided insights on the legal shift—before 1992, mine rehabilitation wasn’t mandatory until the Minerals Act 50 of 1991 set new standards.
🏗️ Anja Esterhuizen (Pr.Sci.Nat.) (DRDGold) introduced us to the Mega Dam, the world’s largest free-standing, fully lined dam—108m high, processing 2.4M tonnes/month, with a capacity of 800M tonnes.
🌱 Jacques Botha shared findings from his rehabilitation research, and Rulof Nortje (Stefanutti Stocks) gave a deep dive into the construction progress of the Mega Dam.
🌍 Zakhele Nkosi (University of Pretoria ) left us reflecting on our deep connection to nature:
“Our buildings may create an illusion of separation, but nature remains a part of us.”

👏 A big thank you to DRDGold & Stefanutti Stocks for hosting us and providing a first-hand look at sustainable mining practices in action.
