The Day of Reconciliation was celebrated as a public holiday in South Africa for the first time on 16 December 1995, established as a way to not only symbolically mark the end of the Apartheid regime in South Africa, but to also commemorate two historically significant events that took place on this day in 1838 and 1961, respectively.
